Safety First

  1. Stop Using the Stairlift
    • If the stairlift behaves unusually or stops suddenly, do not continue to ride it until you have completed these checks.
  2. Switch Off the Power
    • For any physical inspection—such as checking for obstructions—turn the stairlift off at the main power switch (usually on the stairlift or on a nearby wall).
  3. Ask for Help
    • Whenever possible, have someone stand by while you work on or around the stairlift.

Important: If you feel unsafe at any time or are unsure of how to proceed, contact our Service & Repair team right away.

1. Check the Power Supply

  • Power Switch
    • Make sure the stairlift’s main switch (often a red rocker switch) is turned on.
    • Check that any indicator lights on the stairlift are lit. If they are off, there may be no power supply.
  • Fuse Box
    • Verify the stairlift’s plug (if applicable) is firmly in the wall socket.
    • If the stairlift isn’t powering up, check your home’s fuse box to see if something has tripped.

Why This Helps: Stairlifts typically charge through a mains power supply. If this supply is off, the batteries can drain, leading to reduced or no functionality.

2. Key Switch and Isolation Switch

  • Key Switch
    • Locate the key switch, often under the armrest or on the carriage. Make sure the key is inserted and turned to the “on” position.
  • Isolation Switch
    • Some models include an additional isolation toggle near the main switch. Ensure this is also set to “on.”

Why This Helps: If the key is turned off, missing, or the isolation switch is deactivated, the stairlift will not move.

3. Seat and Armrest Position

  • Seat Lock
    • Check that the seat is fully down and locked in the correct riding position. A partially folded or tilted seat can trigger a safety switch.
  • Armrests
    • Some stairlifts have sensors in the armrests. Ensure both are firmly lowered and locked into place.
  • Swivel Mechanism
    • If your seat swivels at the top or bottom of the stairs, make sure it has ‘clicked’ back into travel position before attempting to move.

Why This Helps: Safety interlocks require everything to be in the correct position before the stairlift will operate.

4. Check for Obstructions

  • Rail Inspection
    • Look along the entire rail for any debris or objects (e.g., small toys, dirt) that could block the carriage.
  • Stair Clearance
    • Make sure no shoes, bags, or other items are left on or near the stairs that might interfere with the footrest.

Why This Helps: Stairlifts have obstruction sensors that stop movement if something is detected on the rail or in the path.

5. Batteries and Charging

  • Park Properly
    • If possible, move the stairlift to its usual parking or charging station (often at the top or bottom). You may hear a beep if it’s not docked properly.
  • Charging Indicator
    • Many stairlifts have a charge light that should remain steadily lit (often green) when parked.
  • Battery Condition
    • Most batteries last 3–5 years. If your stairlift seems weak, moves slowly, or stops intermittently, the batteries might need replacing.

Note: If you suspect failing batteries, please contact our Service & Repair team for advice or to arrange a battery replacement.

6. Controls and Remotes

  • Hand Control
    • Check the stairlift’s primary control (joystick or toggle). Ensure it isn’t stuck or blocked by debris.
  • Remote Control
    • If you have a remote call/send unit, replace the batteries if they’re old or corroded.
    • Test from different locations on the stairs to rule out signal interference.

Why This Helps: Simple issues like a dead remote battery or jammed control can prevent the stairlift from working.

7. Error Codes or Display Lights

  • Consult the Manual
    • Many stairlifts show codes on a small digital display or via LED lights. Refer to your manual’s troubleshooting guide for specific meanings (e.g., “E2” for seat-related errors).
  • Reset the Stairlift
    • Some models have a reset button or require you to turn off the main switch for about 30 seconds, then power it back on. Always follow the manual instructions.

Why This Helps: Error codes can quickly identify specific faults, saving time and guiding you on the next steps.

8. Seatbelt or Safety Sensor

  • Seatbelt
    • Ensure your seatbelt is fully engaged. If the buckle is not clicked in properly, the stairlift may not operate.
  • Footrest Sensor
    • Gently check the safety edge around the footrest to ensure it’s free to move. Dirt or debris can jam the sensor, stopping the lift for safety.

Why This Helps: These built-in safety mechanisms prevent the stairlift from running when it detects something unsafe.

9. Listen for Unusual Noises

  • Grinding or Rattling
    • Any loud mechanical noises could indicate a more serious issue.
  • Constant Beeping
    • Continuous beeping often suggests the stairlift isn’t parked correctly on the charging station or the batteries need attention.

10. Check for Recent Changes

  • Home Electrical Work
    • Did you have any recent work done to your home’s wiring or fuse box? This could affect the stairlift’s power supply.
  • Rail Alignment
    • If the rail or stairlift mechanism has been moved or bumped, it could misalign sensors or charging points.

When to Contact TPG Disablaids

If you have followed the above steps and the issue is still unresolved, or if you discover a mechanical fault, please reach out to TPG Disablaids at tpg-disableaids.co.uk. We recommend contacting us in any of these cases:

  1. Mechanical Faults or Damage
    • Grinding sounds, broken parts, loose rails, or other physical wear.
  2. Persistent Error Codes
    • Reoccurring error messages even after you attempt a reset.
  3. Electrical Concerns
    • The stairlift has no power despite checking fuses and the power switch, or it repeatedly trips your home’s circuit breaker.
  4. Battery Replacement
    • Batteries generally require safe removal and replacement; we can supply and fit them for you.

Summary

  1. Start by checking the basics: power supply, key switch, seat position, and any obvious obstructions.
  2. Verify the charging status and ensure the controls (hand or remote) are working properly.
  3. Look for error codes or flashing lights that indicate specific issues.
  4. Always remember to put safety first, and if in doubt, consult the user manual or contact our Service & Repair team for professional assistance.

With this guide, most simple stairlift issues can be addressed quickly and safely. If you need further help or a professional service, we are here for you at tpg-disableaids.co.uk. Feel free to reach out, and we will ensure your stairlift is back to full working order as soon as possible.
