What Is Personal Independence Payment (PIP)?

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a UK benefit designed to support people who live with long-term health conditions or disabilities.
It helps cover the extra costs of daily living and mobility needs. PIP is gradually replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for adults.

Who Can Claim PIP?

To qualify for PIP, you must meet specific eligibility criteria. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) assesses each case individually.

  • You must be aged 16 or over and under State Pension age when making a new claim.
  • Your health condition or disability must have lasted, or be expected to last, at least 12 months.
  • PIP is available whether you are working, unemployed, or studying.
  • You do not need to have paid National Insurance contributions to apply.

How Does the PIP Assessment Work?

The DWP assesses how your condition affects your ability to carry out daily living tasks and mobility activities.
You may be asked to attend a face-to-face or telephone consultation with a health professional.

Points are awarded across different activities, such as preparing food, managing medication, washing and bathing, or moving around.
The total points determine whether you qualify for the standard or enhanced rate of PIP.

How Much Is PIP Worth?

PIP is made up of two parts: the daily living component and the mobility component.
You can receive one or both depending on your assessment.

  • Daily Living Component: Standard or Enhanced rate.
  • Mobility Component: Standard or Enhanced rate.

The exact weekly amounts are updated by the government every April.
Visit the official PIP guidance on GOV.UK for current rates.

How Do You Apply for PIP?

Applying for PIP involves several steps:

  1. Contact the DWP to start your claim (usually by phone).
  2. Complete the “How your disability affects you” form sent by post.
  3. Provide medical evidence and supporting information from doctors, carers, or therapists.
  4. Attend an assessment if invited.
  5. Receive a decision letter with your award and payment details.

Will My PIP Award Be Reviewed?

Yes. PIP is not a permanent award. Reviews are usually scheduled every few years, depending on your condition.
This ensures that payments remain appropriate if your needs change over time.

How PIP Affects Mobility and Equipment Support

Many people use PIP to fund essential mobility aids such as stairlifts, wheelchairs, or scooters.
Enhanced mobility awards may also give you access to the Motability Scheme, where you can lease a car, powered wheelchair, or scooter.

What If Your PIP Claim Is Rejected?

If you disagree with a decision, you can request a Mandatory Reconsideration.
If the decision is upheld and you still disagree, you may appeal to an independent tribunal.
Many appeals are successful when supported by detailed evidence.

Summary

PIP is designed to support people with long-term health conditions and disabilities,
helping to cover the additional costs of daily living and mobility.
Understanding eligibility, assessment, and appeal rights is essential to securing the correct support.
